“Life is too short to be living someone else’s dream,” said the late Hugh Hefner, who in the early 50s was frustrated with his career as a copywriter at Esquire magazine. In 1953 he decided to launch his own magazine, and a legend was born.
In short, Hefner hated his corporate-working-for-someone-else-world and started to live his own dream as an entrepreneur. And who could blame him?
You spend your life working 50- to 80 hours a week for what? Making money for your boss and, if you’re lucky, getting a small pat on the back. Employees are sometimes seen as a means to an end – an easily replaceable commodity.
That lack of purpose is a big reason that employees disengage from corporate jobs. Gallup’s 2017 State of the American Workplace Report found that 51-percent of employees are actively looking for new jobs. That’s huge.
Leaving corporate America for a new job or to become your own boss requires having a good career transition plan in-place before you quit your current job. The important thing is to start.
Think about what’s missing in your current situation, what your dream job might look like and what additional training you may need to achieve it.
And, if becoming your own boss is your heart’s desire, let’s talk. It’s time to build your dream.
