At 63, I’ve had my share of hard knocks. I thought my career was nicely mapped out as a real estate executive. Little did I know my company would relocate its entire portfolio overseas. With their move went my job.
Being let go so suddenly taught me not to tie my self-worth to my job. My role was a big part of my life, but it didn’t define my career.
I wasn’t done yet.
Oprah was fired from her job as a television reporter after being declared “unfit”. Abraham Lincoln lost 8 elections before finally becoming President.
So don’t let the results of your job define you. Success isn’t about how much you make, or even being first to an idea. It’s simply getting back in the ring one more time after getting knocked down.
You only truly lose when you quit. But if you choose a different road, whether it’s jumping into the world of entrepreneurship or starting a franchise, there is always the possibility to reinvent yourself.
There is always light at the end of the tunnel.
So get up, and try again. I’ll be right with you.
