The Reality of Today’s Career Landscape
The collective human spirit is eternally optimistic. We constantly strive for a future where we are better off than today, where our dreams take tangible shape. However, the narrative isn’t always uplifting. More and more experienced professionals find themselves pushed out of companies or facing salary cuts due to being deemed “too expensive”. This leaves many yearning for more control over their careers and financial futures.
For those untouched by such circumstances, a desire for something more fulfilling often lingers – something to secure a comfortable retirement.
Hope in Mid-Career Changes
A study by the American Institute of Economic Research offers encouraging insights for those considering a career pivot. It found that between 2011 and 2012, 1-2 million workers aged 45 to 65 successfully changed careers, and 90% of these career changers reported their transition was successful. Many even experienced a decrease in stress levels and started following their passions.
Steps to Successful Career Transition
The study also shed light on shared traits among successful career changers:
- Overcoming Fear: Around 49% of successful career changers admitted to being “very nervous”. Yet, despite their anxieties, they took the leap.
- Not Waiting for the “Perfect” Moment: Most successful career changers didn’t have additional financial resources. Even though 30% took a pay cut initially, over time, half of them reported an increase in income.
- Swift Transition: On average, successful career changers switched their work situations in less than a year, compared to 22 months for unsuccessful ones.
- Leveraging Existing Skills: Successful career changers typically utilized seven skills from their previous job. The top skills included problem-solving, interpersonal and public communication, reading comprehension, and basic computer skills.
- Going Against the Grain: Surprisingly, many successful career changers did not follow traditional networking advice, instead, finding their own paths to new careers.
Mapping Your Future: The Franchise Opportunity
In light of unforeseen career twists, you’re left with four options: find a job in your current or a new industry, start your own business, buy an existing business, or invest in a franchise.
As a franchise consultant, I often ask my clients to envision their lives five years from now as franchise owners. The franchise model presents an opportunity to apply your existing skills and experience in a proven business environment, offering more control and potentially a higher level of fulfillment.
